Name Changes

Victims of violence may want to change their names for privacy and safety. Victims can use the civil court system to legally change their names.

No one is allowed to change their name for illegal reasons. People convicted of felonies cannot change their names unless they are changing it to the name they were convicted under.  People who are age 14 or older must get a fingerprint-based criminal history check before they can legally change their names. Children and people over age 70 have to meet other requirements if they want to change their name.
